Decide what you need to store

Measure bulky items such as cushions rather than choosing by litre capacity alone. Internal dimensions, lid opening and the shape of the stored items determine whether the space is genuinely usable.

Compare materials and construction

Outdoor storage boxes may use plastic or resin, timber, metal or combinations of materials. Weather resistance, UV exposure limits and maintenance requirements are product-specific. Check the manufacturer's information rather than assuming that every plastic or metal box can remain fully exposed.

Water resistance is not the same as waterproofing

If the contents need to remain dry, check the product's stated protection and installation requirements. Lid design, drainage, ventilation and exposure can all affect moisture inside a storage box.

Useful features

Wheels, handles, lockable lids, gas struts and seating-rated lids may be available on some models. Only use a storage box as a seat where the manufacturer specifies that it is designed and rated for that purpose.

Placement and care

Use a stable location and follow the manufacturer's cleaning and storage guidance. Consider access to the lid and whether surrounding walls or furniture will restrict opening.
